Folklore, Rituals & Cosmologies of the Haitian and Dominican Diaspora Legacy Project
TERMS OF SERVICE
Effective Date: July 22, 2025
Project Title: Folklore, Rituals & Cosmologies of the Haitian and Dominican Diaspora Legacy Project
Hosted by: Roots & Resonance Musing | Viergelyn Chery-Reed
1. Purpose of the Project
This project gathers and honors stories, rituals, spiritual practices, and cosmologies passed down through the Haitian and Dominican diasporas. These may take the form of personal memories, inherited beliefs, shared superstitions, or cultural folklore with no known originator. The intention is to build a living cultural archive for remembrance, healing, and legacy.
2. Submissions and Cultural Stewardship
By submitting content (stories, traditions, audio, visuals, etc.), you agree that:
You are contributing in the spirit of cultural preservation and collective storytelling.
You may or may not be the original source of the knowledge or story, and that’s okay.
You are sharing material you’ve encountered, inherited, or practiced, with the understanding that it belongs to a broader cultural or ancestral lineage—not to any one individual.
We recognize that many submissions are part of shared oral traditions, and we honor their communal roots.
3. Usage Rights and Attribution
You retain credit as the contributor, curator, or witness of the story or practice you’re submitting.
Roots & Resonance Musing is granted a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to archive, publish, adapt, and repurpose your contribution across platforms (Substack, print anthologies, audio/video storytelling, workshops).
When possible and appropriate, we will credit contributors. However, for communal or unattributed cultural stories, we may publish them as “From the Haitian/Dominican diaspora oral tradition, shared by [First Name or Anonymous]”.
You are not required to prove authorship of stories rooted in communal heritage or oral transmission. For legal reasons, you must, however, cite any information that you use that has been sourced.
4. Notification of Future Use
Submissions may be included in:
Print or digital publications
Workshops or educational events
Audio/visual projects or exhibitions
Because many stories submitted are part of shared cultural memory (not original works in a legal sense), notification will be made publicly through email updates or Substack announcements, rather than requiring direct permission each time.
If you opt in, you will receive periodic updates about project development. You may withdraw your submission at any time by emailing us.
5. Respect and Integrity
We are committed to ethical storytelling. We do not tolerate:
Disrespect of sacred cultural practices or people
Harmful stereotypes, misinformation, or hate speech
Misuse of communal wisdom for exploitative purposes
Roots & Resonance reserves the right to decline or remove any submission that does not align with these values.
6. Withdrawal & Revisions
You may request that your contribution be edited, anonymized, or removed from future use at any time. Contact us at: rootsandresonance@substack.com
